What is hot mix asphalt?
Hot mix asphalt (HMA) consists of a combination of aggregate uniformly mixed and coated with asphalt cement. To dry the aggregates and to obtain sufficient fluidity of asphalt cement for proper mixing and work-ability, both the aggregate and asphalt must be heated prior to mixing—hence the term “hot mix”.
Aggregates and asphalt are combined in a mixing facility in which all of the constituent materials are heated, proportioned and mixed to produce the desired paving mixture. After plant mixing is complete, the hot mix is transported to the paving site and spread with a paving machine in a loosely compacted layer to a uniform, even surface. While the paving mixture is still hot, the material is further compacted by heavy motor-driven rollers to produce a smooth, well-consolidated pavement layer.
Hot mix asphalt paving
Hot mix asphalt paving mixtures may be produced from a wide range of aggregate combinations, each having its own particular characteristics suited to specific design and construction uses. In addition to the amount and grade of asphalt used, the principal characteristic of the mix are determined by the relative amounts of course aggregate, fine aggregate and mineral filler.
Components of asphalt hot mix plant
The asphalt plant consists of cold feed bins, primary vibrating screen, charging conveyor, drying drum with burner. hot aggregate bucket elevator, pres-separator with bag filter, muti-deck vibrating screens, hot receptacles, mixing unit, bitumen storage tanks, weighing hoppers, filter storage silo/hopper, control cabin and panel.

Working process of hot asphalt plant
First step, put the unheated-crude aggregates into various receptacles of the cold aggregate feeder. It should be based on the size. Cool feeder gates on individual receptacles can control the aggregates flow.
After the first step, the aggregates are moved to drying drum by a charging conveyor.
Drying drum is matched with a burner, so it can heat and dry the aggregates.
Many hot mix plants are equipped with a secondary dust collector for settling substantial dust particles. The machine has a primary dust collector and an auxiliary dust collector. The latter one has function as a bag filter.
Once aggregates are heated in the drum, they are transferred to the tower unite by a bucket lift.
There is muti-layered screening unit on top of the tower unit. Hot aggregates get treated to screening impact as they go through the screens. They will be separated and put away into various receptacles according to sizes.
Separate hot receptacles make it easy to store each sort of aggregates separately.
Once the aggregates are sorted in different receptacles, they are weighed and released into the mixing unit, and mixed with bitumen and filler material.
With a pumping station, bitumen tank is used to heat and store bitumen additionally. The pumped bitumen in the hopper should be weighed before putting into the mixer.
Hot mix asphalt will be ready to be moved into waiting trucks after all the above stages are finished.

Reasonable deign of hot aggregate bins
Provide hot bin storage of sufficient capacity to ensure uniform and continuous operation. To ensure separate and adequate storage of appropriate fractions of the aggregates, divide bins into the specified number of compartments arranged.
Equip each compartment with an overflow chute of such size and at such a location to prevent ant backing up of material into other compartments or into contact with the screen.
Equip bins with an indicator device to indicate the position of the aggregate in the bins at the lower quarter points. Provide an automatic plant shut-off to operate when any aggregate bin becomes empty.
Provide adequate and convenient facilities for obtaining aggregate samples from each bin.
Application of asphalt plant environmental protection technology
Main pollution of asphalt mix plant includes dust, noise and asphalt smoke. Dust control is mainly through physical methods, including sealing, dust collection cover, ventilation, dust removal and recycling. Noise reduction measures mainly include muffler, noise enclosure, frequency conversion control and so on. Asphalt smoke contains a variety of toxic components, and its treatment is complex, requiring both physical and chemical methods. The following focuses on the treatment technology of asphalt smoke.
- Bitumen smoke combustion technology
- Low light level resonance asphalt smoke purification technology
- Integrated drying cylinder technology
- Pulverized coal clean combustion technology
- Closed type asphalt mixing plant
